mission: Back Bay Ringers is an innovative handbell organization dedicated to promoting excellence in handbell artistry through performance, education and community.
As the city of Boston's only community-based handbell organization, Back Bay Ringers is at the forefront of a rapidly growing community handbell movement. BBR currently supports three performing groups: Back Bay Ringers, an auditioned touring ensemble; Back Bay Carillon, a community based training ensemble, and Back Bay Quartet. Founded in 2003 BBR has quickly developed a reputation for excellence, regularly performing at such Boston-area landmarks as Faneuil Hall, Symphony Hall, the Boston Children's Museum and the Prudential Center. Recent collaborations have allowed BBR to work with the New England Treble Chorus, Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Choral Ensemble and the Boston Children's Chorus.
Recently, BBR has released its first recording, Merry and Bright: A Celebration of Carols with the Back Bay Ringers. It has also commissioned two original handbell compositions Imprezzo (unpublished) by Kathleen Wissinger and a new work by Cathy Moklebust to be premiered in the Spring of 2009.
BBR's members and directors are renowned leaders in regional and national handbell education programs, frequently serving as organizers and clinicians at local, regional and national events. BBR's commitment to music education is also evidenced by the organization's chime donation program, which BBR established in conjunction with the annual Boston Handbell Festival to benefit music programs in Boston-area public schools.
